STATUS REPORT #17 City of Sanibel Beach Status (8/15/18)
Read this status report for current beach conditions.
This morning at the beaches, bayous and canals we continue to observe
an overall significant reduction in the dead sea life being deposited
on our beaches. We have continued to reduce our contractual labor,
fleet and rolling stock to be able to respond to any low tide deposits
or large carcasses which washes ashore. Unless conditions change
significantly, persons on the beach will begin to see a return of
Sanibel's beaches to a natural state. See photos below. See below the
detailed report for each beach. For current Red Tide Conditions &
Forecast click here NOAA Gulf of Mexico Harmful Algal Bloom Bulletin.
Yesterday 6 large fish carcasses were removed from our beaches (1 Goliath Grouper & 5 Tarpons). As of the end of business Monday, August 13th, the total dead sea life removed from the beaches is 309.6 tons (619,200 pounds). This amount does include the whale shark that washed up on July 22nd as well as the Goliath Groupers and Tarpons. The amount does not include the dead sea life removed from the canals.
